Being an Additional Learning Needs Teaching Assistant for secondary school mainstream learners, has been an exceptional opportunity for myself for the first two terms of the 2024/25 academic year. Supporting vulnerable and young students had me coming up with new and old approaches that best suit individuals to provide them the best and most effective learning experience the school can provide. Despite the daily challenges in supporting a high school class with their learning, advocating them for their learning needs has been truly rewarding.
As an elected representative for the Students’ Union, I amplified the student voice throughout thousands of students across multiple campuses. I communicated to a diverse range of learners, engaging with their interests and collecting student feedback on a large scale. I utilised this feedback by attending meetings with faculty leaders and other student leaders. In 2024, I was awarded for my enthusiasm towards empowering the student voice, for the Student Voice Representative of the year.
Editor-in-Chief for a student-led student magazine at the University of South Wales. Since appointed this exciting role, I have published 3 magazines with the brilliant psych students at USW. From proof reading creative and academic articles, to designing each page to appeal to the reader, every issue was unique and high quality.
As a crew member at one of the largest food chains in the world, no shift at McDonald’s has been the same. Being fully trained in customer service, hygiene, and food preparation, I have been equipped to confidently provide the best service I can to all our guests. Strong communication is a requirement in this role to ensure the team runs smoothly and orders heading out the kitchen. I have developed the skills to multitask effectively while also working flexibly across most stations within the store. Being able to work during busy hours in the city center has taught me how to handle new challenges and stressful situations constantly.
Being a highly dedicated black belt student representing WKO, it has been a great learning opportunity helping instructors run their classes for students aged 4-15. Since starting training in 2009, I have participated in several competitions, and have developed coaching skills to independently teach classes and to guide students to improve as martial artists.
Being elected to represent all learners at Cardiff & Vale College on a further education level gave me the best opportunity to represent the student voice and to run campaigns for things that matter, such as tackling Islamophobia and anti-bullying. From running information stands across multiple campuses and handling large amounts of student feedback, to attending meetings regularly with students and staff, no week was the same.
As a part of my placement for my Health & Social Care certificate, I was excited to utilise my skills at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. I attended elderly wards, meeting patient to keep them occupied, such as by engaging in in-depth conversations, playing games, and keeping everyone smiling during difficult times. During my time, I developed a lot of patients and empathy towards the patients. Communicating with the nurses on the ward was also eye opening in to the working world of health care.
